What a week!

So Monday was teacher planning day and my husbands colonoscopy so no school.  Tuesday was E's birthday so school consisted of learning to eat out and how to act.  Grocery shopping for cake mix and learning about trans fat (nutrition) and did a little math.  Play outside.  Tomorrow starts school back.

Wednesday 3/25/15.  We started the day with W reading AAR.  He did well still needs some work on blends then W went on to handwriting, worked on words with the sh, and t in them.  E did reading AAR when he did the work he did well.  He still has to sound out every word but he can do it and read the work.  His brother W sounds out the words also but E is faster at it, still looking for ways to make reading not such a hassle. Last up for W was math.  We reviewed even/odd counting, vertices and diagonals, and some addition with 5, then we learned 2 5's secret and worked on geoboard.  E's turn for math.  Same thing as for W.  E is very good with patterns.  Next up for E was handwriting words that had q, r, and s.  Tiger Rock was tonight.

Thursday 3/26/15.  Today W started again.  He chose to do AAS first and almost has i and o mastered.  Next he did Math.  W did very good.  Today was review and worksheet.  He used the abacus some on the worksheet and used other problems to help with others like 5+6=11 so 4+6=10 and 5+7=12 and 6+5=11.  I was proud.  He was getting the concepts and using critical thinking skills.  Now it is E's turn.  E chose to do AAR first.  Still working on sounds th, ch, and sh almost has sh mastered.  Still working on the green cards did a set of 10 today non mastered but getting there with sounding them out.  I read the last 10 green cards that were introduced.  I figured a good way to get him there.  We proceeded with the lesson today was double consonants at the end, ff, ll, and ss.  Did good.  I then read a scholastic book call Dinosuars level 2 reader.  I read it to him.  He seemed to enjoy the book and he listened nicely. Next on the list was handwriting.  He chose to do the words that began with y and z.  W is up again.  Now onto AAR. W mastered 2 words (sun and hat). I read the last 10 green cards that were introduced.  I figured a good way to get him there.  We proceeded with the lesson today was double consonants at the end, ff, ll, and ss.  I then read Power Rangers Samaria Rangers Unite.  He listened to the whole book (32pages).  This is his favorite book.  Next up for W was handwriting, worked on words with u and v at the beginning.  Need to work on W's spacing within a word.  Last we briefly talked about God and what I believed and some of what he believed.  I figured now is the time as a lot of sickness and deaths are occurring around us.  Next up E.  We worked on the sounds for i, o, and y.  Little more work and they will be mastered.  Last we worked on Math.  E did well with counting backwards and even numbers, still needs work on odd numbers backwards and comes before game (same as W) [game is what comes before 7 answer is 5].  Then came the worksheet.  E used the abacus on all except for duplicates like 6+5 and 5+6.  I think he was starting to see the difference in 6+5 and 7+5 and 6+4, ect.  just needs a little more practice.  E wrote about 1/3 to 1/2 of the answers the others he had me write the answers after he figured out the equation and told me what to write down.  Last we briefly talked about God and what I believed and some of what he believed.  I figured now is the time as a lot of sickness and deaths are occurring around us.  I also informed both boys that they could ask daddy and me any question that they had and we would answer to the best of our ability.  Today overall was a very good and successful day, especially with E.

Friday 3/27/15.  E did two lessons of Reading Eggs, while W did handwriting (w,x,y,z words) and one lesson of reading eggs. E did handwriting with no complaints (t,u,v,w,x words) m&m's helped.  W did AAR and mastered a word.  E then did AAR and read the words on the game portion pretty well.  Good Friday.

Spring Break

March 16, 2015.  RightStart Math.  Today we warmed up with even/odd, counting backwards from 20, and addition equations, then we worked on diagonals and vertices, and the words hexagon and pentagon.  Both children did well almost wish we had doubled up on Math today.  Next up AAR fluency sheet day 3.  W did all orange and the bonus yellow.  E did not want to read.  He did good.  At first acted like he didn't know but in the end did it and did it fine.  Next up was FLL.  We worked on How to write a letter.  I feel that for a first time it was good but will visit it again in the future.  Last up was AAS.  Worked on letter o, u, i, and y.  They almost have it.  YES!....W even practiced his 2's for handwriting.

March 17, 2015.  Today we were suppose to do the last part of the fluency sheet for AAR and Math, instead the kids went out and played.  This is the second day they have gone out; last night was the first time in 4 months since they were bullied.  I am happy that they are starting to be able to put this behind them and am encouraging it.

I decided since the kids are going outside and playing with a friend for the first time in 4 months since they were bullied and it is spring break to not have classes for the rest of the week.  I am considering this the time where they socialize and learn critical thinking skills on how to compromise with others, especially my youngest W.

The good week with new things

March 10, 2015.  Today was a doctor's appointment so I had them each do a lesson in Reading Eggs.  I also had them cut out circles, c, and l (lines).  This was to help them with handwriting.  It was to help strengthen their hand muscles.  This weekend I am going to have them help me make our first ever bread.

March 11, 2015.  First up AAR.  E did AAR with minimum complaint.  He also did it well.  W did AAR after E and also did well.  W still has some problems with blends not sure if it is speech related or age related.  Will look that up later.  Next up AAS.  E went first.  E almost has i and y mastered.  Still working on o and u.  W almost has i mastered.  Still working on y, o, and u.  Last we went for math.  Today was first working on Geo boards.  Also for warm up E was able to say all the months of the year except December and counting to 100 by 5's.  W can go a little higher with the counting but needs more work on the months of the year.  Both enjoyed the geo boards.  We worked more with 9's.  W did a worksheet with 2 digits plus 9.  We worked on it together with no manipulatives, by the last few equations he was able to do himself without my guidance.  E did not want to write.  It is obvious by the way he wrote the numbers but he did it.  We worked without manipulatives.  About 1/3 of the way through I started to write what he said and about 1/2 the way done he was able to say the saying on his own and tell me the answer.  An Example of what both kids did was:  54+9=  so we said that 2 digits + 9 = the first digit goes up and the second digit goes down.  so 5 becomes a 6 and 4 becomes a 3 an the answer is 63.  I wish I had known this when I was going to school.  Last on the list was Signing Time-chores.

March 12, 2015.  Today was a great day.  Started off with handwriting.  I decided that we would work on the numbers 1,2,3,4,and 7 to see if that helps them to remember how to write those numbers better.  Then we worked on Math.  Today was partitioning 11 and go to the dump with 11.  Last up was working on Fluency sheet side 1.  W completed his work.  E did half the worksheet and will pick up the rest tomorrow.

March 13, 2015.  Today was not a bad day.  Started off with Math.  Worked with Geoboards and congruent rectangles.  Worked on partitioning 11 and a practice sheet that we did on the white board.  Practice sheet was n+2.  Even/odd.  The next thing for the day was AAR fluency sheet.  W did the page for today and E did yesterdays work and today's work.  E was halfway done with todays work before he realized it because he was playing with W.  E decided that he would finish today's work instead of finishing it tomorrow.

I have learned that when doing the fluency sheets to let the kids 1) negotiate the amount that they do (within reason) and 2) let them run around and read the word.

Start of the week-Needing comments

March 9, 2015.  Today started with AAR.  E of course plays around but eventually gets down to work.  He even mastered a word is.  Next he watched Signing Time.  W watched Signing Time with E and then went to do is AAR.  W also mastered a word but I can't remember which one it is right now.  They both got a pixi stick.  W wanted to do the next subject which was Math.  W is good with mental addition better than me.  I still have a tendency to do the count on fingers method.  W had no problems doing his nine facts in his head.  Proud Mama moment.....although it really is RightStart that deserves the credit.  Next up E.  Well I didn't realize what hassel math would be today.  AAR and Math equal light in eyes.  Well AAR was easy enough to fix but math is a little more difficult.  So after some hassle we agreed he could go in his room and set up but he wasn't able to do it like he wanted.  Not enough room.  I set him up with no light (so to speak) and gave him the worksheet and the abacus.  I leave for a moment and come back.  He wants me in there.  So I stay and all I hear is more whining.  He now wants me to write the answer.  He tells me what it is and I write it.  After leaving and checking on him (found out he took a little nap) I gave in.  I wrote whatever answer he told me.  He ended up getting 2 wrong.  He claims writing is to hard.  I tell him then he needs practice.  If anyone has any ideas please leave a comment.  Thanks.  Also  W has finished up AAS (still working on sounds o, i, u, and y).   W is now working on handwriting words with letters q and r.  So far so good. M and M's and half a donut for final reward.  E worked on sounds o, i, u, and y. Next up was handwriting.  We compromised.  Instead of one long word one time and one short word 2x we he did one long word one time and I wrote the word dog and he wrote it.  It might be time to practice writing numbers maybe trying to remember them from memory is hard.  Also might do some type of handstrenghtening exercises although not sure what.

Trying new things week

March 2, 2015.  Hello again everyone.  Today we started with Signing Time and then moved into AAR.  It was a reading a story day.  E struggles so hard.  It's not that he is not capable it is he just doesn't want to try because he is still in the sounding it out phase.  I might take a week or two and review some key words with him.  I wish I could slow it down for him so that he would start to enjoy reading again but we will probably have to put him back in public school for school year 2016-2017 school year due to money. W reads better than E put still has a few problems putting the sounds together.  He gets frustrated but I think it is more that he sees E does it and wants to copy E. Last on the list is Math.  We did an actual lesson today.  We did the warm up exercise and then had a lesson on how to act.  We moved onto the corners activity game.  The kids are okay with this game.  They are not confident yet even though the answer are more or less on the board.  This is a game we will play again.  Today is done.

March 3, 2015.  Since today is game day I decided for Reading that instead of a game they would read from the first book in AAR.  W read "Jam" from the "Run, Bug, Run!" book in AAR level 1 Vol. 1.  This story is the first story in the book and a fairly predictable story.  W ended up sounding out a few words the main word though was had.  I felt this was a good review and might continue to go this route for the week.  E of course did not want to read.  His latest response was he had already read it and wanted something new.  However he didn't like the one that he read yesterday so we compromised and he read "The Tan Hat" (one I might add he read before) from the "Run, Bug, Run!" book in AAR level 1 Vol. 1.  This is the second story in the book and also a little predictable.  Although E sounded out most of the words he himself decided to reread the sentence that he sounded out.  The second time was read smoothly.  I thought it was a good thing.  I think I might continue on this root for the week.  Next game was the corners activity games.  The kids did better this time.  I helped out but this time I told the the color or the column (column would be look in the 10's column).  We added the points in the end.  W won today but not by that much.  Will play the game again.

March 4, 2015.  Today is pick the order of your subjects day.  W picks order (Reading, Math, Handwriting, FLL, AAS) E picks order (Math, AAS , Reading, FLL, handwriting).  So W reads the same story from yesterday.  He did better today.  He says it is his favorite story.  Next up we do Math lesson from Rightstart which is the corners game.  E and W play.  W wins in the end but they didn't go to 100.  W won with 80pts and E was not far behind with 75pts.  Next up was E for AAS.  He does really well with segmenting.  Time to move on.  Next up Handwriting for W (words for m,n, and o).  E read the same one that he did yesterday (he counted pages to see which story was less).  He did better today.  He didn't feel the need to reread the sentences over.  Next up for both kids is FLL.  We reviewed interjections and conjunctions.  Then we did dictation.  I made up a dictation sentence instead of the one the book used but it worked.  E had the best handwriting yet.  One more thing each and they are done for the day.  W did the AAS and he is good at the syllable too.  Will move on for him also.  E did handwriting but only did one word (o).

March 5, 2015.  Today was suppose to be an easy day.  For W it was.  He breezed through Handwriting (p words and q words), Reading (he read Hit the Gas from Level 1 Vol. 1), Signing Time, and Math.  Today was the end of the 2 day lesson.  It was the corners game again.  He didn't want to play he wanted the corners exercise.  We went to 50 and the boys ended up tying.  W gets the 5, 10, 15, and 20 with no problem  E was a struggle not because he couldn't do the work he just didn't want to.  He did the Handwriting (m and n words), signing time (the only thing he didn't give a hassel about), Math (which he was okay with doing since it was a game his eyes were just acting up), and finally Reading.  He read Lost in the Bog from Level 1 Vol. 2.  This one not the one I wanted him to read but he used logic saying that he wanted to read a harder one so it will be easier later so it is the one we went with.  He read it.  I'm proud.

March 6, 2015.  Today I decided that the kids should retake the 1st 9 week test.  They did really well.  W missed 1.5 questions and E missed 2 questions.  They both got in the 80%-90% range.  I am proud it showed me that they have indeed mastered stuff from that test that when they first took it was not all that good.  Both kids need more work on word problems.  Next was reading.  I finally after lots of hassle about reading got E to read.  E read Jam from Level 1 Vol. 1.  He sounded out the words but that is okay.  I think if he reads it enough the words will come.   W picked The Bad Rat from Level 1 Vol. 1.  He did good.  Next he insisted on his favorite story Jam.  He did really good on that one.  Next up was Signing Time.  W likes to teach me the signs as I do other things.  It works.  E watches and learns but makes it like he doesn't.  To each their own.  I was like that as a kids.  I observed but rarely participated.  Last thing for the day was AAS.  I had them tell me all the sounds for i, o, u, and y.  E has mastered the u.  All in all not a bad day.
