Same Old Same Old

October 20, 2015.  W did HWT pgs. 14-16 lowercase c, o, and s.  Next was 2pg reading of "The Runt Pig." read pgs. 136-137.  Last thing was math lesson 80.

E did HWT finished up p. 12 G,H,and I.  Next he worked on doing the other half of the 1,2,3,4, 7 number page.  He did half of what was left.  He read 1 pg. (pg. 127) of "The Plan".  We went over lesson 45 in FLL without the dictation.  We tried working on math lesson 80 but he was just getting to frustrated.  Going to work on place value tomorrow instead.  Also might see what the next lesson teaches and see if we can skip lesson 80 and come back to it later.

Tonight fun math games at FSU stone building.

October 21, 2015.  E started with Math.  For math we worked on place value (ones, tens, hundreds) using the place value cards.  He did well.  I briefly introduced 2 digit addition 51+23 regarding place value.  2nd up was AAR p. 128-129.  Hassel he is sick of reading 2 pages and only wants to read 1 but I insisted on 2.  3rd up was HWT.  He worked on the 1,2,2,4,7 worksheet and on p. 14 letters C, c, O, and o.  Last up was FLL lesson 46 picture reading.
W started with HWT p. 17.  He also did pgs. 18, 19, 20, and 21.  2nd up was Math place value.  We worked on ones, tens, hundreds.  He did very well.  Might need to review hundreds again later.  We did some addition with place value and he got it.  3rd up was FLL. We went over lesson 45 in FLL without the dictation.  Also  worked on lesson 46 picture reading.  4th up was AAR pgs. 138-139.  Did well.  We even double checked a sentence to make sure what he read made since.

October 22, 2015.  Today for handwriting we did exercises. I had E draw circles light and hard to see the difference in how it felt.  I had him hold the pencil multiple ways to see how it felt.  He decided holding it properly resting and lightly was the best way.  We also used Rubber bands again.  I had him tie 2 rubber bands together (3 sets) and I had him undo 3 sets that I tied together.  E was also into taking pictures with my cell phone.  Next E read 1 pg. (pg. 130) in AAR. 3rd up was Math.  We worked on lesson 81 even/odd numbers.  We did about 1/2 to 3/4 of the work.  Did well.  Last up was FLL lesson 47 adverbs with a verb.  I think adverbs are a little confusing right now.
I had W draw circles light and hard to see the difference in how it felt.  I had him hold the pencil multiple ways to see how it felt.  He decided lightly was the best way.  We also used Rubber bands again.  I had him tie 2 rubber bands together (3 sets), he actually tied them into 2 knots and I had him undo 3 sets that I tied together.  Next up was Math.  We worked on lesson 81 even/odd numbers.  We did about 1/2 to 3/4 of the work.  3rd up W read 2 pgs. (pg. 140-141) in AAR.  Last up was FLL lesson 47 adverbs with a verb.  I think adverbs are a little confusing right now.

October 23, 2015.  Today was a half day.  Reading and Math.
E finished up "The Plan" pgs. 131-133.   W read pgs. 142-143.  They both worked on the last part of lesson 81 even/odd numbers in RightStart Math.  Both did well and get the concept.

See the Week

October 12, 2015.  I think we are getting into a routine now.  FLL, Handwriting, Reading, RGHT Math
W started with RGHT Math rest of lesson 79.  We played one round of Rows and Columns game.  It is adding numbers either in a row or column to get 15.  The one with the most cards win.  W won.  Will play this again.  2nd up was handwriting.  Instead of doing the numbers from HWT I chose to do the numbers from the rightstart math workbook.  He needs work on 2,3, and 7 (we worked on 1,2,3, and 7).  Had a break.  3rd up was FLL lesson 44.  Reading of The Three Billy Goats Gruff.  I read they answered questions.  W did not do good answering questions.  I think he played more than listened.  Although he was able to tell me a little bit about the story.  Last up was 2 pg reading of "The plan".  W read p.130-133.  He read the rest of the story.
E started with HWT.  He was unable to make the letters perfect which clearly fustrated him.  We talked about it and he decided he would just do them.  He did the rest of p. 11 letters ITJ.  2nd up was reading.  We comprised to him reading 1/2 a page (long one to him).  He ended up reading the whole page. He read p.120 in "The Big Mess".  3rd up was RGHT Math rest of lesson 79.  We played one round of Rows and Columns game.  It is adding numbers either in a row or column to get 15.  The one with the most cards win.  It was a tie game.  Will play this again. Took a Break.  Last up was FLL lesson 44.  E did very well answering the questions and telling me something he remembered about the story.  Just need to work on answering in complete sentences.  I do however model this.  If he answers eat him.  I say he wanted to eat him.
Today was a good day.  IT's a win.

October 13, 2015.   Today was no school.  They learned home economics.  How to clean and organize a refrigerator and a freezer.  W helped with freezer and E helped with refrigerator.  They learned how to get along.

October 14, 2015.  Today was field trip day with the co-op.  We went to Spring Hill Farms.  They enjoyed bouncing in the bouncy houses, hay rides, finding their way through a corn maze, eating lunch, playing in a tub full of uncooked corn kernels, pumpkin painting, and pumpkin chucking.  They learned about the battle-lift what it was used for in the olden days and what they use it now for (chucking pumpkins).  They also did lots of socializing and learned about port-a-potties.

October 15, 2015.   Today W did rightstart math lesson 80 the first 1/3 and we went over some green cards.  He mastered new words today:  I, for, ten, red, and was.
E finished up the story of "The Big Mess" he read the last 2 pgs.  Next he did the capital letters:  A, B, C, J, K, L, S, T, U.  K, S, and U need work.

October 16, 2016.  Today W did Handwriting worksheet on numbers 0, 5, 6, 8, 9, .  Then he reviewed green cards from AAR.  Non mastered today but that is okay.
Today E did Handwriting letters D, E, F, M, N, O, V, W, X p. 12 and then wanted to work on numbers so he did half a page of 1, 2, 3, 4, 7.  He read the first page in AAR of "The Plan".

We ended school early because Public school let out and although I thought their friend had plans today it changed so socialization it is.

The Must Have Homeschool Tool

We received a red pencil sharpener from http://classroomfriendlysupplies.com/ . It is the best manual pencil sharpener I have found. Easy to operate. Both my kids and husband can use it.

First you pull the front out.

Then you squeeze the 2 black nobs and put the pencil in the hole and release the nobs.
And the pencil stays in.

Next you turn the crank. One way will loosen the crank so you can open it up the other way sharpens the pencil.

As you crank the turning of the wheel will get easier and that is how you know when the pencil is sharpened. Also the front goes in as the pencil gets shorter.

Next you squeeze the 2 black nobs and pull the pencil out.

This is the end result.

I want to make a special note that I did this with 2 types of pencil. One pencil was brand new.

And this is the outcome.

Once pencil I broke.
And this was the outcome.

This is a magnificent sharpener.

Not that bad of a week

October 6, 2015.  Today was Mathseeds (part of readingeggs but math).  Each child did a lesson.  Also while waiting to have E's blood drawn I had them play with stone clay.   So handwriting, so to speak, was worked on.  They worked on finger strength without realizing it.  Last thing worked on today was puzzle of the United States.  This one will take a little while.

October 7, 2015.  Today AAR, HWT, ST, FLL, and RGHT Math.
W read p. 118-120 (2 pgs read, 2pgs pictures) in "The Big Mess".  He is not a fluent reader but he is coming along.  Then comes HWT p.10 UVWXYZ (more Corner Capitals).  3rd up is Story Time.  I read Horton Hears A Who! by Dr. Suess. 4th up was FLL Lesson 41 on indirect quotations and copy work.  Last up was RGHT Math lesson 78.  Did everything but the worksheet.  We of course took breaks in between.
E started with story time.  We went outside and I read Horton Hears A Who! by Dr. Suess.  Next up was HWT p.10.  He did UVW.  3rd up was AAR.  E read pgs. 114-115 (in "The Big Mess).  He did well, also not a fluent reader yet. But I think he is getting use to reading 2 pgs now.  4th up was RGHT Math lesson 78.  Did everything but the worksheet.  He seemed a little off on adding 4 digits together.  Last up was FLL lesson 41 on indirect quotations and copy work.  He did 1/2 of the copy work and will work on the rest of the copy work tomorrow.

October 8, 2015.  Today AAR, RGHT Math, FLL, and HWT.
W did lesson 42 in FLL which was a review of previous lessons.  Next AAR.  W read p. 122-123 and finished up "The Big Mess" and then went on and read p. 126-127 of "The Plan".  Math was worksheet 30 from lesson 78.  He did well only a couple of problems he needed my help with.  Others he got right or was able to correct on his own.  He did this work independently.  The worksheet was about numbers that added up to exactly 20.  Last was HWT center starting capitals.  COQGSAITJ.
E did lesson 42 in FLL which was a review of previous lessons and then also did some more work on the copy work from lesson 41.  In AAR he read 2 pgs p. 116-117 in "The Big Mess".  Next up was HWT.  He worked on the rest of Corner Capital XYZ.  He is doing real well with copying.  I have noticed this through the copy work in FLL so far the lower case s is what gives him trouble.  Last up is Math worksheet 30 from lesson 78.  E did not work alone.  He wanted help so I and the abacus helped him.  He would figure out what numbers to use and we would double check them on the abacus until he figured out which were the correct numbers that added up to 20.

October 9, 2015.  FLL, AAR, HWT, and RGHT Math.
W did HWT p. 12 write each capital letter.  Next up was AAR.  He read 2 pgs. (p. 128-129).  3rd up was Math lesson 79.  We went over adding to 15.  W is very good with mental math.  Needs no manipulatives.  Last up was FLL lesson 43 reviewing sentences and dictation the word Stop.
E did Math lesson 79.  He's not all that confident but is able to do the work.  He used an abacus to help with the addition.  We went over adding to 15.  Next up was FLL lesson 43 reviewing sentences with dictation the word Stop.  He also finished his copy work from lesson 41.  I wrote the word wouldn't for him.  3rd up was HWT p. 11 letters COQ.  For whatever reason he likes to do his handwriting in groups of 3 (maybe it is part of the OCD).  He will do the next 3 on Sunday..  Last up was Reading.  He read 1 pg (p. 118)

October 10, 2015.  Real world experience.  They learned how to act in a restaurant, how to promote a business (they watched me), how to determine if they have enough money to buy what they wanted, and how to make and play with friends.

October 11, 2015.  HWT.  E did p. 11 and did 3 more letters.  We skipped yesterday due to making new friends.

Week 4-Some fun things happening

September 29, 2015.  Today we worked on AAR, RGHT Math, and FLL.  I read lesson 39 from FLL "Little Bird" poem for memorization to both E and W 3x this morning, 3x the afternoon, and 3x tonight.
W started with math lesson 77.  We went over the warm up and then worked on whole/part for numbers 10 and 15.  W split 10 into 3 parts and 15 into 3 parts.  We did this several times.  Next up was reading "The Big Mess" Lesson 40 required pages 2.  W did the minimum required pages, read pgs. 116-117.
E started with AAR tic tac toe.  See last weeks post on the rules.  We played several rounds and E is doing good both with the word and starting strategy.  Next up was math lesson 77.  We went over the warm up and then worked on whole/part for numbers 10 and 15.  W split 10 into 3 parts and 15 into 3 parts.  We did this several times.  E needs more work on recognizing facts fast.

September 30, 2015.  Today was game day.  We played 2 games.  One was a math game from RightStart, called on the number.  The purpose is to practice adding several numbers together.  You start with a target number between 10 and 20.  I chose 10 for us.  We played a few of these.  The next game was a board game called Knights and Castles.  This game has 2 levels: level 1 "Quest" and level 2 (level 2 is more history).  We played level 1.  The kids are learning strategy, fair play, and board game etiquette.  E did very well, W not so much.  W quite in the middle.  E kept playing and won.  All 3 of us started in the game.

October 1, 2015.  Today we did FLL, RGHT Math, and AAR.  W and I started with FLL lesson 40.  I read the folk tale "The Little Red Hen".  W answered verbally the questions asked at the end of the story.  We need to work on answering questions in complete sentences.  W also did the copy work on a dry erase board.  Next up was reading AAR "The Big Mess" min. 2 pgs.  W read the 2 pgs. (118-119).  He read well.  Last up was math journal ____+_______+________=10.  He wrote out 7 of these equations.
E and I started with FLL lesson 40.  I read the folk tale "The Little Red Hen".  E was able to  answer some of the questions at the end of the story.  We did this verbally.  We need to work on answering questions in complete sentences.  W also did the copy work on a dry erase board. Next up was Reading Tic Tac Toe.  I switched up the words.  Tic Tac Toe reading is going well.  Last up was math journal ____+_______+________=10.  E wanted to do this verbally so I wrote down in the journal what he said.

October 2, 2015.  Today was Reading Eggs day.  I logged each child onto their account and they played in the playroom and each did one reading eggs lesson.  W did lesson 55 and E did lesson 49.

October 3, 2015.  Today was science day and a little home ec./hand strengthening .  Today we went to Lake Ella for the science.  The kids experienced walking on a bridge held up only by itself, extracting DNA out of a banana, stain glass, magnets, and much more.  At home they cut up some okra.
