November 8, 2015. Today we went on a Field Trip to a members only event at Gulf Specimen. It was raining all day. The kids got to touch and feel some of the animals (sea stars, crabs, ect.). They got to look at others (sharks, huge turtles, ect.). One of the cool things that they were able to do was feed an animal of their choice a bit of fish. W chose the big fishes (parhannas) they swarmed on the little dead fish like there was no tomorrow. E chose to feed the shark tank. While there we learned that little lady (I think that was the name) (the big baby girl turtle) would be eventually released in the wild so they feed her crab but she had to go after the crab on her own. Had to hunt it. We also learned that turtle shells have nerve endings right under them. We saw the nursing sharks (3 of them being feed), they get feed once a week. If the little one thinks she isn't getting her fair share she squirts water at the person doing the feeding. My oldest E also got splashed by the sharks. They saw sting rays and all sorts of animals and even learned a little about red tide.
November 9, 2015. I am not feeling good today. Allergies extra bad. W managed to do HWT (finished up p. 27, then did pgs. 28 and 29). I talked to E today about Handwriting and we decided he is good with print so we will move onto cursive per his request.
W went back to read "Jam" in the Run, Bug, Run book (the very first story in the first book). He did real well. Fluency was very good and he was able to answer questions about the story. This is his favorite story because he says it is funny. E read p. 144-145.
Last was Math. W did lesson 85 and the game. The games was multiples memory. It is a good game for learning skip counting. He enjoyed it. E also did lesson 85 and the game. He enjoyed it as well. We played the game twice.
November 10, 2015. No school as I was under the whether.
November 11, 2015. We started taking the DORA assessment.
November 12, 2015. Today we have a lot to do and will see what gets accomplished. I think I made math just a little long based on the children's reactions. I started with W today. He did RightStart Math lesson 86 dealing with Quarters (1/4). He is getting the idea but we need to work on the language of 1/2, 1/4, whole. He loved the experiment with the water to visually see whole, 1/2, and 1/4. Next lesson was science from Mystery Science dealing with habitats of present and past. We started with mystery 1. He worked on a worksheet after listening to some of the video. He knew most of the answers only got one part wrong. Then it was break time. We finished the DORA assessment. Compared to his assessment of 5/14 he has improved a little. Need to step up the game and focus a little more time on a particular part of reading. He is currently at Mid-K level for most things. Next up was outloud reading and answering a few questions. W read The Fox in a Box from the Level 1 V 1 book. This is the 11th story in the book. He did okay with reading but will need to reread it for fluency. He was able to answer a few basic questions about this story after he read the story.
Next up was E. He started with science from Mystery Science Animals through Time Mystery 1: Habitats and Environmental changes. He worked on a worksheet after listening to some of the
video. He knew most of the answers only got one part wrong. The same part that W got wrong. They both chose forest when the answer was grasslands for the now part not the then part. Next up was Rightstart math lesson 86. He gets it when seen visually with the water and if done separately like 1/2 then 1/4 but not if asked about all of it verbally with another number like 12. He loved the experiment with the water to visually see whole,
1/2, and 1/4. Will continue to work on 1/4 for both children. Break time. E worked some more on the DORA assessment. He was not happy. Next E read another page of "The Runt Pig". He read p.146. I have a feeling we will need to do the same with him that I will be doing with W. Not looking forward to it as he is the one that throws the most fits when it comes to reading but it will need to be done.
November 13, 2015. Today was a great day. W finished up the slides from Mystery Science. W also did 1/2 lesson 87. Today was working with money and quarters (1/4). Next up was FLL lesson 52. We did 1/2 a lesson as the lesson was a bit longer than normal. Working more on verbs. HWT pgs.30-31 letter u and u words. He wrote the word dust very well. Still needs practice on little u as it almost looks like a little a. Today I had W reread "The Tan Hat" 2nd story in L1V1 book. He did well. He did need to sound out some words but that is why we are rereading previous stories to help out with fluency and comprehension. He was able to answer some basic questions about the story.
E's turn. Today E decided that he would do more work on the DORA assessment. He did well attitude wise no fussing involved. I would have let him go on but we had some computer problems today and I didn't want that to negatively affect his score. Next up he chose Math. We did 1/2 lesson 87. Today was working with money and quarters (1/4). After math while he was playing with the money I moved onto FLL lesson 52. We did 1/2 a lesson as the lesson was a bit longer than normal. Working more on verbs. HWT-today was the first lesson on cursive. P. 7 is a cursive Warm-up and they want you to do 1 line a day. He did 1 line and then he chose to move onto p.8. He did all but the last line. p. 8 is cursive c. Last was reading. He read 1/2 a page knowing that tomorrow he will read the other 1/2. Though I must say the 1/2 that he read he read really really well.
Done in record time today.
November 14, 2015. Today E read the other half of p. 147. He read well again. He sounded out a few words but he read well and with no attitude.
